All announcements are subject to Corona conditions and short-term changes

Third update, February 2021:

  • As many of you will have guessed, the continuing lockdown still prevents us from holding any face-to-face meetings.

Of course, your membership will be extended, as 2020 was so disrupted!

  • The city council will give up the Brücke building at Kasernenstraße and move to Mecumstraße 10 (the former red brick Barmer building in Bilk between the Düssel and Auf’m Hennekamp), where we hope to be able to offer an autumn programme.

In fact, we were told in the last few days that we have to clear everything out of the Brücke during March, earlier than was originally expected. This means that, sadly, there will be no more meetings in the spring.

The new building is not far from the bus stop Feuerbachstraße of buses 780, 782 and 785, which go from Heinrich-Heine-Allee towards Erkrath, Solingen or Langenfeld, and 350 metres’ walk (5 minutes) along Fruchtstraße from the tram stop Karolingerplatz. From the main railway station, the tram 704 comes to Karolingerplatz.

  • We hope you have all kept well during this extraordinary time, and look forward to seeing you again before too long!

Please stay tuned and check here for new information.

About us

The English Speakers' Circle was formed in the early 1960s and has always been part of ‘die Brücke’, the International Education Centre, which today includes over 25 international clubs and societies closely linked to the Volkshochschule for Adult education.

Our main activities are talks in English on topics of general interest, often by native speakers. We organize occasional English theatre performances and special events such as a summer outing.

Meetings

Our normal meetings are on Saturdays at 17:30h every two, three or four weeks during the VHS terms in the 3rd floor Club Room (room no. 306) at Kasernenstraße 6, 40213 Düsseldorf, near the underground station Heinrich-Heine-Allee.

Prior registration for the normal club meetings is NOT necessary. A small fee is charged for non-members.

Theatre evenings

Our theatre performances are normally at the 'Weiterbildungszentrum', the VHS building in Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz immediately behind the mainline station and are on a weekday evening, often Friday. Advanced purchase of numbered seats is possible for these performances at our meetings (or phone Susan).

Membership

Membership of the Circle is for a calendar year; this gives free entry to meetings in the club room and reductions on our arranged theatre performances and some special events.
